The Market is open rain or shine. We only close if there’s a dangerous storm, but programs in the Events Tent (music, Storytime and others) may be cancelled for other reasons.

In the case of inclement weather or excessive heat, the Belmont Public Library and the Market reserve the right to cancel Storytime and other programs in the interest of the health and well-being of participants and library staff.

If the Library cancels an event, it will be posted at the top of their home page, and on their social media. We will post cancellations on the home page of this website, and on our social media.

The following are weather conditions which may result in program cancellation:

  • If an Excessive Heat Watch, a Heat Advisory, or an Excessive Heat Warning is declared for an area that includes Belmont by the National Weather Service or Massachusetts Emergency Management.

  • If weather forecasts and outdoor conditions indicate that temperatures or the heat index will be 88 or more degrees Fahrenheit.

  • If weather forecasts and outdoor conditions indicate steady or heavy rain, hail, thunder, lightning, or damaging winds that would make the outdoor conditions uncomfortable or dangerous for storytime participants and library staff.

  • A cancellation will be declared no later than 3:00 P.M on Market days. Staff from the library will communicate with the Market volunteer in charge for the day.

The following sources were consulted in constructing this policy:
The National Weather Service, Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Town of Belmont, Emergency Management of The City of Boston, the Weather Channel.
